New York – FINALLY!

Remember that time I was trying to fly to New York to cover the 2013 NHL Draft?

Remember when I flew from Vancouver to Toronto without issue before a brief layover?

Remember when I had a slight delay before taking off to New York, then found out just before landing that they couldn’t in fact land because of weather, so the pilots played Etch-A-Sketch in the sky above the Big Apple for 90 minutes BEFORE FLYING BACK TO TORONTO?

I remember. And I’m trying to forget.

Last night was wild. Tried to land in New York, couldn’t, returned to Toronto and was told I’d be aboard a flight at 8:15 a.m. EST Friday morning for New York, and given a hotel stay for the rest of the night.

At 3:00 a.m. EST I finally got to sleep and it wasn’t long before the 5:30 a.m. wake-up call.

Back to the airport only to find out there is no 8:15 a.m. flight, there never was and every flight to New York was booked for the day.

$&# $*%^&@* %*$^@%*$&$*

After some haggling, patience and kindness of others, we got on the 1:15 p.m. flight and I’m jacked to be posting this from NEW YORK FREAKIN’ CITY!

I’m not as mad as you think I would be for two reasons: 1 – Mother Nature has done a lot worse, I can keep flight delays in perspective. 2 – I brought a secret weapon along on this trip… He looks like me, although he’s blonde with blue eyes, talks like me, although doesn’t know quite as many words, and is tall like me, although not as tall. He was recently described as being just like me, but not as dorky – one Kurt Jory!

My baby bro Kurt is 26, a Taurus, he once saw the movie Chain Reaction at the Theatre in Clear Lake, Manitoba, can do stomach rolls and his middle name is Whitney. He works in wealth management and is going to the draft for work, although I believe he also thinks he has a chance of getting drafted. He doesn’t.

Back on topic: traveling to the draft.

It seems like just yesterday I was flying backwards returning from San Jose, Canucks season having just ended.

That was a quiet flight, let me tell you.

A lot has changed since early May. John Tortorella is now Vancouver’s head coach (sweet), the Chicago Blackhawks just won the Stanley Cup (sour), my son learned how to ride a bike (slow) and I got a haircut (shaved).

Covering the 2013 NHL Draft this Sunday is the latest chapter of Joey, Jory & Rory’s Excellent Adventures, which you may remember from last summer’s home visits with Cory Schneider, Maxim Lapierre, Chris Tanev and Steve Pinizzotto.

Yes, reporter Joey Kenward is here, as is cameraman Rory McGarry, and we’ve also brought along our special guest Kurt.

On less than three hours sleep, I don’t have much else to say right now, but I promise to provide updates from our wild adventures all weekend. Sunday is the big day; leading up to it we’ll be taking in the sights and sounds of New York, while attending any draft related events with free food.

Stay tuned not only to Canucks.com and Fort Nucks, but also @VanCanucks on Twitter and Canucks on Instagram.

Thanks for coming along for the metaphorical ride, it’ll be a lot better than the actual ride has been thus far. Great times await.

Now about our hotel – It’s either near a central park in Newark, or Central Park, New York, I can’t remember. Oh boy.

Shout out to big Stu and little Stu, Dana, Amanda, Danae, Mr. Yukon and Tom Green, who all played a roll in our journey so far.

Derek

P.S.

Fannypacks are still in fashion, right? I don’t think they ever went out of style, great news for when the Jory brothers take on Times Square!
